The ‘Changing World Dialogue’ (CWD) launches its first plenary session of 2026 with a webinar on ‘New Challenges for Global Governance and the G20’. This invitation-only session brings together experts and thought leaders to examine how recent shifts in global power dynamics are reshaping international relations, global governance, and the system of international institutions.

Session Leads:

  • Yves Tiberghien, CWD Co-Chair

  • Susan Thornton, CWD Leadership

  • Henry Huiyao Wang, CWD Leadership

The discussion will focus on how the G20’s four great powers (the US, China, the EU, and Russia) and sixteen middle powers are navigating a more pluralistic and complex global environment. Participants will explore the evolving role of middle powers, the impact of unilateral and multilateral strategies, and the challenges and opportunities for global governance in a time of heightened geopolitical tension.

Key Questions to Explore:

  • How will shifting alliances and power dynamics affect the G20’s ability to address global challenges and maintain financial stability?

  • Can middle powers use their growing influence to strengthen global governance and uphold international norms?

  • How should major powers balance unilateral actions with multilateral responsibilities in areas such as climate change, global health, economic stability, and security?

  • Will global existential risks motivate collective action, or will national self-interest dominate decision-making?

This session offers a space for a high-level exchange of perspectives on the future of global governance, the role of middle powers, and the pathways for constructive cooperation in an increasingly fragmented world.
