The ‘Changing World Dialogue’ (CWD) is kicking off its Fall 2025 sessions with a webinar on:  ‘Middle Powers and Middle Power Diplomacy’ on Thursday, October 23rd.

This invite-only expert round, led by GSI Fellow and CWD Co-Chair Colin Bradford and CWD Co-Chair Alan Alexandroff, will discuss actions by Middle Powers in a highly tense geopolitical environment. This includes the tensions and fragmentation caused by President Trump’s trade, finance and security policies since his return to the White House.

While there is no all-encompassing list or precise definition for Middle Powers, the concept reflects around two dozens of countries. These come from different geographies but are majoritarily from the “Global South”. Examples include most BRICS countries as well as Mexico, Canada, Indonesia South Korea and Scandinavian countries. More details can be found in the articles Middle Powers and Their Impact on the Global Order and Turning Back to Middle Powers – The Contrasting Character of Middle Powers? by Alan Alexandroff.

The expert round will exchange views on questions such as:

  • Are Middle Powers willing to collaborate in ‘coalitions of consensus’ to address global governance challenges?
  • How may Middle Powers advance global governance initiatives, promote global economic growth, and enhance greater international stability –  in the interests of all?
