Michelle Uriarte

Young Global Changer 2020/2021

Mexico | Michelle Uriarte is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Durham University. Her research is dedicated to developing a tailored solution for Mexico City’s waste crisis, aiming to establish a sustainable waste management system and promote a circular economy.

Michelle has experience in both the private and public sectors, notably contributing to the creation of the first draft for the Zero Waste Initiative within Mexico City’s government. She was awarded a CONACYT scholarship for both her Master’s and PhD degrees. Michelle has presented at the European Parliament and other international conferences, covering topics such as sustainability, circular economy, and climate change. She also received a scholarship for a short program in Resource and Energy Management at Beijing Normal University. She holds an MSc in Energy and Society from Durham University and a BSc (Hons) in Sustainable Engineering from ITESM CCM. Additionally, Michelle serves as an undergraduate tutor in the Geography Department at Durham University.
