Sebastian Camarero Garcia
Principal Economist and Policy Advisor, European Commission
Dr. Sebastian Camarero is Principal Economist and Policy Advisor at the Directorate-General Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (DG FISMA) of the European Commission being a Seconded National Expert from the Eurosystem’s Deutsche Bundesbank. He is working in the international affairs unit preparing, coordinating, and advising on, inter alia, the G7/G20 finance track, the Financial Stability Board and other multilateral/bilateral international (regulatory) fora in the domain of finance or the Savings and Investments Union (SIU).
Sebastian also works as Principal Economist and Policy Advisor (Bundesbankdirektor) for the head of the Directorate-General (DG) Markets at the German Central Bank (Deutsche Bundesbank), overseeing strategy, governance, and organizational transformation, in particular, monetary policy implementation and financial services.
From 2023 to 2024, Sebastian worked as a Senior Policy Advisor in the economic, financial and climate policy department of the German Federal Chancellery.
Earlier, he served as Senior Economist at Deutsche Bundesbank contributing to monetary policy strategy and the implementation of key instruments, such as the Transmission Protection Instrument (TPI) and the quantitative tightening of the balance sheet.
Before joining the Central Bank, he also worked as a Researcher and Consultant at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW Mannheim).
Sebastian earned his Ph.D. in economics (summa cum laude) from the University of Mannheim in 2020 with a dissertation on labor and public economics. He also holds an MSc in Economic Research from the University of Mannheim (2016), an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE, 2014), and a BA in Economics from the University of St. Gallen (2013). As visiting researcher, he also studied and conducted research at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) and the LSE (e.g., Centre for Economic Performance).
Sebastian’s research bridges monetary policy, labor markets, fiscal policy, and public economics and has been published in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals, such as Labour Economics, Small Business Economics, Journal of Human Resources, and Journal of International Money and Finance.
Sebastian is a recipient of the merit-based fellowships of the Cusanuswerk as well as the German National Academic Foundation.
Fluent in German, Spanish, English, and French, Sebastian combines rigorous academic insight with strategic policy experience across central banking, government, and international institutions.
