Global Sustainability Agendas – Identifying and Overcoming Financing Gaps and Obstacles

Bridging climate finance gaps to drive green growth and sustainable development through global expert collaboration.

In 2025, the Global Solutions Initiative launched the Global Sustainability Agendas – a project funded by Stiftung Mercator. The project aims to explore financing gaps and obstacles in climate finance and sustainable development. The cornerstone of the project is the establishment of a Community of Practice of leading cross-sectoral experts. Following a successful kick-off event at the Global Solutions Summit 2025, a series of international workshops will be conducted through 2027.

The project aims to develop a series of concrete and actionable policy recommendations to be presented to the Group of Twenty (G20), to address roadblocks to climate finance and the green transition. It will do so by building on existing proposals and approaches, and bringing together a diverse group of experts, including those from underrepresented sectors and regions.

The project was successfully launched with a kick-off event during the Global Solutions Summit 2025. This occasion was featured in the online magazine AufRuhr here (in German).

The next step is an international expert workshop in South Africa in September 2025, coinciding with the G20 International Financial Architecture Working Group Meeting (see here on the G20 calendar).

Community of Practice

The project establishes a community of practice comprised of policymakers, financiers, researchers, and civil society leaders from every region. They share evidence, test ideas, and turn them into practical recommendations on climate finance and green growth. The group elevates underrepresented voices to ensure solutions are effective and fair.
