Summit Round-Up: Closing Speech by Dennis Snower

The Digital Global Solutions Summit 2020

On account of the Coronavirus pandemic and the international reactions to it, the Global Solutions Summit 2020 needed to be reconceived.

With the Digital Summit Platform the Global Solutions Initiative not only provided a stepping stone to the T20 and G20 Summits 2020 under difficult circumstances, but also an opportunity: The opportunity was to reimagine the future of the G20 support in terms of a combination of digital and physical interactions, enabling a closer dialogue across the research, policy making, civil and business communities around the world.

With some 209 speakers, over 800 contributions including keynotes, panel discussions, dozens of vision statements and policy briefs, the purpose of the Global Solutions Initiative’s work, to support multilateralism and the G20 from a civil society and research-based perspective was realized. We thank our over 5,000 digital participants for taking part.

Here you will find a detailed overview of the main topics that were set this year – always with a reference to the Global Solutions’s narrative of Recoupling. The program overview with all Global Tables can be found here.

Themes of the Digital Global Solutions Summit 2020

The Digital Global Solutions Summit 2020 centered around core sessions that contribute to the agenda of the G20 and T20 by addressing the Task Force areas plus an additional area dealing with policy in response to the COVID-19-pandemic. Underlying all topics is the Global Solutions Initiative’s narrative on Recoupling. All panels dealt with the connections that are made with this narrative to the G20 on specific topics. In addition, the visions were highlighted in further keynotes and panels. A detailed overview of the subject areas and their focal points can be found here, which are deepened in descriptions of the corresponding Global Tables.

Review Global Solutions Summit 2019

In 2019, 1,600 participants from various sectors and 120 countries have registered for the summit, met with 221 speakers and participated in over 60 sessions. The summit aimed to provide policy recommendations on major Group of Twenty (G20) issues and thereby served as a stepping stone to the Japanese Think20 (T20) Summit in May 2019 and the Japanese G20 Summit in June 2019. The Global Solutions Summit 2019 was a Think20 Japan associated event.

The Global Solutions Summit 2019 focused on the priorities of the Japanese G20 Presidency, including policy recommendations on sustainable development, infrastructure finance, financial architecture, trade and investment, climate change, future of work and education, social cohesion and the future of politics, SME policy, policies for aging populations, and more.

All discussions linked to the overarching narrative of recoupling economic, environmental and social progress. We furthermore highlighted all relevant issues for the future of multilateralism and strengthened the implementation site in our discussions.
