TILL RÜCKWART

This year the Global Solutions Summit features artwork as part of its program for the very first time.

On-site guests at ESMT Berlin are encouraged to view the photographs from “Salty Glitches” by Berlin-based media artist and scholar Till Rückwart. These can be viewed at Foyer II in the ESMT Berlin. The program includes an artist talk during lunch on Monday, May 6, 2024 at the ESMT Berlin.

ABOUT SALTY GLITCHES
The project consists of four intriguing and colorful satellite images found on Google Earth depicting the vast salt deserts of South America, where lithium is extracted from the soil of Chile‘s Atacama Desert and Caucharí-Olaroz in Argentina. The imagery emerges from malfunctioning software known as “glitches,” which are caused by bugs in the source code of the geovisualization software.

The exhibited images illustrate intersecting topics covered at the Global Solutions Summit such as consumer behavior, the role played by global trade, and the true cost of technology for people and planet. In a flash, these fleeting moments juxtapose the impermanence of digital media with the ineluctable effects of environmental degradation; fueled by consumer demand, the tableaux of “Salty Glitches” depict a world in need of recoupling.

On behalf of the Global Solutions Initiative, we extend our deepest thanks to the artist for his contribution.

GUIDED TOURS

ESMT Berlin is located in the former “Staatsratsgebäude,” one of Berlin’s most historical buildings. Before housing today’s school, the building served as headquarters of the former East German State Council and later as the Federal Chancellery of the reunified Germany. During the breaks we offer guided tours for Summit guests to learn more about the venue’s complex, illustrious history. The tours are 20-minutes long, the start times are available in the agenda.

YGC LOUNGE

Think20 (T20) Task Force Briefs

The Global Solutions Summit convenes experts engaged with the Think20 (T20) process. Learn more about policy proposals from the T20 Task Forces through the posters exhibited near the Solution Forum.

A Panda do sol

A Panda do Sol is a Berlin-based music project composing, producing and promoting Brazilian and transatlantic music since 2016. The ensemble uses instruments common to  Samba music and blends them with New Orleans brass, resulting in a wonderful basis for strong solos and vocal harmonies. They will perform at the Summit’s evening reception on Monday, May 6, 2024.
